Tanzania has joined Kenya and Uganda in the search for a least cost option for a pipeline that will take crude oil from East Africa to export markets and allow its natural gas to be exported to neighbouring countries.


After fact-finding missions last week to the competing ports of Lamu, Mombasa and Tanga, technical teams went back to the drawing board to look for an optimum solution that also ensures the strategic interests of the three countries are accommodated.

Simba Energy has said that through its subsidiary Company Simba Africa Rift Limited together with its farm in partner Essel Group ME (EGME), have agreed that the 2D Seismic Data Acquisition and Processing program will cover approximately 500 line km of survey to commence in early May 2016.



Simba says it expects that preliminary field work and mobilization will commence in mid to late April, 2016 before the full survey with the work set to take about 60-75 days to complete to be followed by interpretation of the data.

Mr Rielo made the pledge in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with Dr Magufuli at the State House, according to a statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications.

Kenya’s Block 12B operator Tullow Oil and joint venture partner Swala Energy have announced that the government of Kenya has approved a new work programme submitted by the explorers involving carrying out a Full-Tensor Gravity (“FTG”) Survey over the block to optimise the location of the exploration well and thereby maximise its chances of success.

Following the extension on March 10th the partners have until  16th of August 2017 within which to drill the 12B exploration well.

Days after Tanzania and Uganda are said to have agreed on a more southern route that would avoid Kenya’s oil rich Lokichar basin the latter’s finance and energy cabinet secretaries are putting a brave face saying it is not a done deal.


According to finance CS Henry Rotich and Energy CS Charles Keter despite the said agreement between Tanzania’s president John Maghufuli and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni the pipeline project is a regional project in the fate of all East African Community states.

Swala Energy, which in partnership with Tullow Oil is prospecting for oil and gas in the Nyanza basin, has estimated recoverable crude of up to 808 million barrels in the area.


According to a report dated February 2016, the area around Ahero in Kisumu, would produce most of the amount with the rest coming from around Kendu Bay in Homa Bay.
